Inspected 12 July 2023 · report published 24 August 2023What inspectors found
Pine Lodge Care Home in Sittingbourne provides accommodation and personal care for up to 59 older people and those living with dementia. While residents and their relatives reported feeling that the service was safe and that staff were kind and approachable, a recent CQC inspection revealed widespread and serious concerns across all areas of operation. The leadership team lacked oversight and failed to maintain a culture focused on personalized, high-quality care, resulting in significant regulatory breaches.
When it comes to safety, the home struggled with major shortcomings, including unmanaged risks related to diabetes, pressure ulcers, and catheters, alongside incomplete emergency evacuation plans and unsafe staff recruitment procedures without proper background checks.
Effectiveness was heavily compromised because pre-admission assessments were not properly conducted, staff did not always receive essential training or regular supervision, and residents were not offered food that met their specific health needs.
On a caring level, while staff were described as kind, residents were not always treated with respect, equality needs were overlooked, and individuals were not given the opportunity to discuss their end-of-life wishes.
The responsive category highlighted that care was not tailored to individual needs, with residents missing out on personalized activities and accessible information, and failing to be consulted about the use of CCTV on the premises.
Finally, the well-led aspect suffered from a clear absence of effective quality monitoring, management oversight, and learning from past mistakes, which placed the home into special measures while urgent improvements are demanded.
