This inspection report for Port Regis by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) provides an overview of the care provided in April 2019. The report covers five key areas: safety, effectiveness, care, responsiveness, and leadership. Following a previous inspection where improvements were required, this review found significant progress, with the service now meeting the characteristics of Good in all assessed areas. The report highlights the commitment to ensuring residents feel safe, respected, and well-supported, with a focus on person-centred care and effective management practices.
On safety, residents reported feeling secure and relaxed, with potential risks to their health and welfare carefully assessed and managed through detailed guidance for staff. Medicines are administered as prescribed, though a minor point for improvement was noted regarding the storage of some creams, which the home has committed to address. Recruitment procedures are now robust, ensuring staff are safely employed, and there are sufficient numbers of staff available to meet residents' needs.
In terms of how effective the care is, residents' needs and choices are thoroughly assessed before admission, ensuring care plans are personalised. Staff receive regular training and supervision to maintain their skills, and residents are supported to eat and drink well with choices offered at mealtimes. The service works collaboratively with health professionals to ensure residents receive timely and appropriate healthcare, and the building's adaptations support residents' needs, although some areas of decoration require refreshing.
The service is caring, with staff observed treating residents with dignity and respect. Residents are encouraged to make decisions about their care and are supported to maintain their independence. Privacy is consistently respected, and personal care is provided discreetly. Residents are welcomed to maintain relationships with visitors at any time, and they have the freedom to move around the building as they wish.
Regarding responsiveness, care plans are personalised and regularly reviewed, with families involved when residents cannot participate. The home offers a range of activities, both group and individual, and residents are encouraged to engage in their interests. A clear complaints policy is in place, and all concerns raised have been resolved to the satisfaction of the complainants. End-of-life wishes are discussed and recorded, with the service providing support at these times alongside healthcare professionals.
In its leadership, the service has made significant improvements. The CQC rating is now appropriately displayed. There is an open and transparent culture, with residents feeling comfortable interacting with the registered manager and provider. Audits are conducted regularly across all aspects of the service, and when shortfalls are identified, action plans are put in place and monitored. The registered manager ensures that important events are reported to the CQC in a timely manner.
