Inspected 11 August 2020 · report published 27 August 2020What inspectors found
This report details the findings of an unannounced inspection of Sherrell House, a care home providing accommodation and nursing care for up to 92 individuals, including those with dementia. The inspection followed a previous assessment in November 2016 where the service was found to be in breach of several regulations. This visit, on September 4, 2017, assessed the improvements made, finding that the provider had successfully addressed all previous concerns. A registered manager was not in post, with a senior manager overseeing operations temporarily, and a new manager was expected to start shortly.
On safety, the home has made significant improvements, with staff now well-trained in safeguarding and knowing how to protect residents from abuse. Risk assessments are robust and regularly updated, and medication is managed safely and accurately, with reduced errors. Sufficient staffing levels are now in place, allowing staff to respond promptly to residents' needs, and residents and their relatives confirm they feel safe.
In terms of how effective the care is, staff receive comprehensive training, including on the Mental Capacity Act, and regular supervision. Decisions about care are made with residents' consent, and where capacity is lacking, best interests are considered, with improvements made to documentation regarding these meetings. Residents' nutritional needs are met, and they are supported to maintain their health.
Regarding caring practices, staff are described as kind and caring, fostering positive relationships with residents. They communicate with compassion and respect, ensuring residents' privacy and dignity are maintained. Residents and visitors reported feeling well-supported and respected by the care team.
On how responsive the service is, a clear complaints procedure is in place and complaints are addressed. An activities programme is offered that reflects residents' needs and preferences, contributing to their overall well-being.
Finally, concerning how well-led the service is, the provider has implemented effective quality assurance systems, regularly monitoring and auditing the service. Previous regulatory breaches have been met, and the provider actively encourages feedback from residents, relatives, and staff to drive continuous improvement. Staff feel supported and encouraged to contribute their ideas for enhancing the service.
