Inspected 8 July 2022 · report published 18 August 2022What inspectors found
Spencer House in Birchington provides residential care for up to 25 older adults, including those living with dementia. Recent inspection findings show that while residents experience a warm, engaging, and compassionate environment with strong community links, the home needs to address several administrative and operational shortfalls. Management took immediate corrective action during the visit to resolve several of the highlighted issues, and a refurbishment plan is already in place to update the premises.
When looking at safety, certain risks had not always been consistently assessed or monitored prior to the inspection, such as checking specialized pressure-relieving cushions and noting fire safety risks associated with paraffin-based creams, though these were addressed immediately. Medicines were generally managed and disposed of safely, and staff were recruited through thorough background checks, though some medication temperature logs were missed and PRN pain relief protocols were initially missing.
Regarding effectiveness, three residents staying for short-term respite did not initially have formal care plans in place, and some staff members were a few months behind on their refresher training. Parts of the building and the garden were in need of repair and redecoration, though a comprehensive refurbishment plan involving residents is underway. On the positive side, residents enjoyed the food choices, had good access to healthcare professionals, and staff correctly followed legal frameworks regarding mental capacity and consent.
The home excels in being caring, with residents and relatives consistently reporting that staff are kind, compassionate, and respectful of privacy and dignity. Staff take time to build positive relationships, and the atmosphere is described as relaxed and friendly.
In terms of being responsive, residents are supported to maintain relationships, avoid social isolation, and enjoy meaningful daily activities. People and their families expressed confidence in raising any concerns with the management team and noted that there were no unresolved complaints.
Finally, regarding well-led management, internal audits and checks had failed to identify the specific shortfalls discovered during the inspection regarding care plans and risk assessments. However, the management team responded immediately to fix these issues, and staff felt well-supported and listened to by the leadership.
