This report summarizes the findings of a recent inspection at Stubble Bank, a care home and specialist residential mental health service for young people. The inspection assessed various aspects of the service to ensure it meets high standards of care. Overall, the report indicates that the home provides a supportive environment for its residents, with a focus on their recovery and reintegration into society. The findings cover key areas related to the safety, effectiveness, caring nature, responsiveness, and leadership of the service.
Regarding safety, the home demonstrated robust risk assessments and effective safeguarding processes, with staff well-trained and confident in reporting concerns. Recruitment practices were thorough, ensuring suitable staff were employed, and measures were in place to prevent the spread of infection. However, a recommendation was made regarding the safe storage of some medicines and improvements were noted in temperature recording for storage areas during the inspection.
In terms of how effective the care is, the service actively supports residents in having maximum choice and control over their lives, always acting in their best interests and employing the least restrictive methods. Staff are trained to manage individual risks, and these are regularly discussed and reviewed. The home operates within the principles of the Mental Capacity Act, with appropriate authorisations in place when needed.
On the caring aspect, residents and their relatives felt staff were supportive, kind, and attentive to individual needs, fostering independence and encouraging family involvement. Staff were noted for their ability to sit with residents for as long as needed, building trust and providing comfort. The home's ethos is understood by staff and residents, with a strong emphasis on valuing individual identities and diversity.
The service is responsive to the needs of its residents, with a clear vision for the service and managers who are open and honest in their approach. Residents are given regular opportunities to provide feedback to improve service provision, and the provider has clear audit processes in place to ensure good quality care.
Finally, looking at how well-led the service is, the provider is well-organised, with clearly defined roles and responsibilities for managers and staff. There is a strong person-centred culture that values individual preferences, and the registered manager promotes openness and honesty. While partnership working with external health professionals was generally positive, one professional suggested more collaboration could be beneficial for specific health needs. Audits and monitoring systems are in place to assess service quality, and staff feel supported in their roles.
