What inspectors found

Sunnycroft Residential Care Home provides accommodation and personal care for up to 32 older adults, including those living with dementia and physical health needs. Situated in Southampton across two accessible floors with extensive private grounds, the home fosters a warm, transparent, and family-like atmosphere. During the unannounced inspection in April 2018, both residents and visiting relatives expressed immense satisfaction with the relaxed environment and the high standard of personalized care delivered by a passionate and dedicated team.

The service maintains a secure environment where residents feel protected from harm through robust safeguarding procedures, well-managed infection control, and thorough risk assessments. Medication handling is safely organized with properly trained staff, and emergency plans are clearly established. While safety practices are generally strong, inspectors noted minor areas for growth, such as upgrading the legionella risk assessment and capturing precise month-and-year employment histories on staff application forms.

Staff ensure care is effective by supporting residents with a nutritious, balanced diet tailored to individual preferences, complete with specialized equipment and dietary support where needed. Healthcare professionals are involved promptly when health concerns arise, and staff thoroughly understand the principles of the Mental Capacity Act to protect residents' rights. Inspectors identified a minor point for improvement regarding legal documentation, noting that one relative's paperwork did not grant the specific authority required to make health and welfare decisions.

Staff excel in being genuinely kind, compassionate, and attentive, taking extra time to ensure residents feel listened to, reassured, and treated with utmost dignity. Relationships between residents, families, and staff are exceptionally warm and friendly, creating a vibrant community where everyone feels valued and special.

Activities are creative, purposeful, and tailored closely to individual life histories, empowering residents to maintain independence and contribute to the life of the home. Care plans are detailed and regularly reviewed with families, and although no formal complaints had been raised, the management remains fully approachable and ready to address any concerns promptly.

Leadership is exceptionally strong, transparent, and committed to continuous improvement in collaboration with residents, relatives, and staff. The management team fosters a strong culture of learning, staff support, and open communication, while also building meaningful links with the wider local community.
