The Cedars is a residential care home that provides personal and nursing care for up to 12 individuals. The CQC inspection report from June 2019 details the service's performance across five key areas: Safe, Effective, Caring, Responsive, and Well-led. The report highlights a commitment to person-centred support, aiming to help residents live as full a life as possible with control, choice, and independence. While the home is larger than current best practice guidance for domestic-style properties, the report notes that the building's design and integration into the residential area mitigate any negative impact. The service received positive feedback from residents, with one stating, "I am very happy here... The staff are all great."
On safety, the home ensures residents are protected from avoidable harm. Systems are in place to safeguard individuals from abuse, and staff are trained to identify and respond to concerns. Risks to residents are assessed and managed, the environment and equipment are safe, and staffing levels are considered appropriate. Residents receive their medicines safely, with appropriate training and auditing in place. Infection control practices are followed, and the service learns from any incidents that occur.
In terms of how effective the care is, residents' needs and choices are assessed, and care plans are detailed and regularly updated. Staff are skilled, receive good induction and ongoing supervision, and work collaboratively with external health agencies. Residents are supported to maintain a balanced diet, and the adapted building and garden accommodate their needs. The service actively promotes healthier lives and ensures residents have access to necessary healthcare services, all while respecting their rights and obtaining consent for care.
Regarding caring practices, the service treats residents with compassion, kindness, dignity, and respect. Staff demonstrate empathy and build strong relationships, knowing residents well and supporting their individual communication needs. Residents are encouraged to express their views and make decisions about their care, and their privacy, dignity, and independence are consistently upheld.
The service is responsive to residents' needs, with personalised care plans developed in consultation with residents and their relatives. Communication needs are met by providing information in accessible formats. The home actively supports residents to maintain relationships, pursue interests, and participate in socially and culturally relevant activities. While there were no formal complaints, the report recommends reviewing how end-of-life care preferences are explored and documented.
Finally, the service is well-led, with a positive culture that is person-centred, open, inclusive, and empowering. Residents and staff have confidence in the management team, who are approachable and supportive. The provider adheres to the duty of candour, acting openly and honestly with residents. Clear roles and responsibilities are established, ensuring the effective and safe running of the service.
