Wellcroft is a residential care home that currently provides personal care for up to 42 older people across two floors, each featuring its own communal lounge and dining areas. Following a recent inspection, the service has been found to deliver reliable support through a dedicated team, a clean and adapted environment, and positive working relationships with local healthcare professionals. While residents and their families experience a warm and structured setting, the inspection also highlighted several areas requiring attention, such as staffing perceptions, task-focused routines, and the ongoing rollout of new electronic systems.
When it comes to safety, the home maintains secure premises with regular equipment checks, safe recruitment practices, and proper medicine storage. However, some residents felt that staffing levels were occasionally insufficient, leading to waits for assistance. Additionally, the newly introduced electronic medication system lacked immediate guidance for 'as required' pain relief, and one instance was observed where a staff member did not wear proper protective equipment during mealtime support.
The care provided is effective, supported by regular GP visits, well-managed dietary needs, and a comfortable environment featuring dementia-friendly touches like individualized front doors. Staff receive relevant training and regular supervision, and care plans are currently being updated as the home transitions to a new digital records system.
The atmosphere is generally kind and caring, with staff knowing residents well and promoting their independence and privacy. Despite these positive interactions, staff were sometimes observed being overly task-focused, occasionally overlooking individual preferences regarding television or background music in communal areas.
The service is responsive to daily needs and complaints, offering a variety of activities such as arts and crafts, music, animal therapy, and monthly outings. End-of-life care is planned carefully in cooperation with local doctors, and information is accessible to those with sensory needs. Work is actively ongoing to make the digital care plans even more person-centered.
Leadership has seen a recent transition with a new home manager who is in the process of registering. Residents, relatives, and staff speak positively about this new management and feel that improvements are heading in the right direction. The home actively gathers feedback through surveys and meetings to share learning and drive continuous improvement across the service.
