Woodlands Care Home is a residential care facility providing accommodation and personal care for up to 31 individuals, including those living with dementia, mental health conditions, and the elderly. This report details the findings from a recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), focusing on how the home performs in key areas of care provision. The inspection aimed to assess the safety, effectiveness, caring nature, responsiveness, and leadership of the service, building on previous feedback. The findings provide insights for families seeking a suitable care environment for their loved ones.
Regarding safety, while the home maintains cleanliness and fresh-smelling communal areas with effective cleaning systems, some environmental aspects required attention. For instance, radiator covers were not always securely attached, though this was addressed during the inspection. Fire exits were clear, but surrounding storage needed better organisation. A new electronic system for medicines management has improved safety, alerting staff to missed doses, however, guidance for 'as required' medications was not always consistent. Although staffing levels have been increased, some staff and residents noted that staffing could still feel insufficient during busy periods, particularly at night.
In terms of how effective the care is, Woodlands Care Home has made significant improvements. Mealtimes are now relaxed, with residents receiving timely and appropriate support, and snacks and drinks are readily available. Staff are proactive in referring residents to healthcare professionals when needed. A new electronic system for care plans ensures staff have easy access to necessary information, and daily handovers facilitate good communication. People are supported to make choices and decisions about their lives, with staff acting in their best interests.
When considering how caring the service is, the report highlights that people and their relatives consistently shared positive feedback about the staff's approach. Residents feel safe, happy, and well-cared for, with many relatives expressing confidence in the service and stating they would recommend it. Staff have received training in safeguarding, and concerns are promptly reported. Visitors are welcomed without restriction, contributing to residents' social well-being.
Concerning the responsiveness of the service, Woodlands Care Home ensures residents can access healthcare services promptly. Relatives are kept well-informed about any changes in their loved one's needs or healthcare visits. The home offers opportunities for feedback through surveys and meetings, with residents and families feeling heard and involved in the care process. The environment is adapted to meet needs, with residents able to personalise their rooms and plans are in place to improve communal space.
Finally, on how well-led the service is, Woodlands Care Home has implemented robust governance systems. Records are now securely stored electronically, and staff records are kept confidential. Quality monitoring has improved, with systems in place to identify areas for improvement and track progress. Incidents and accidents are recorded, reviewed, and lessons learned are shared with staff. The registered manager is described as inclusive and transparent, with good communication and a clear understanding of residents' needs. Plans are in place to address environmental improvements and staffing reviews.
