Inspected 8 February 2022 · report published 16 March 2022What inspectors found
This report from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) provides an overview of Linda Grove, a residential care home for individuals with learning disabilities. The inspection focused on the safety and leadership of the service. It highlights areas where improvements are needed to ensure the well-being and quality of care provided to residents, while also noting some positive aspects of the staff's dedication.
On safety, the home was not always secure and presented health and safety concerns, with issues such as an intermittently working heating system and uneven outdoor areas noted. The management of risks associated with people's health conditions and support needs was also not always effective, with a lack of detailed risk assessments leading to increased potential harm. Furthermore, infection control practices, including the use of personal protective equipment and hygiene standards, required significant improvement, with concerns raised about the effectiveness of cleaning schedules and adherence to policy.
In terms of how effective the care is, staff knew the residents well and were described as caring, treating individuals with kindness and respect. However, care was not consistently person-centred, meaning residents were not always supported according to their stated preferences in their care plans.
Regarding the caring aspect, staff demonstrated kindness and a genuine care for the people they supported, often going the extra mile. They felt well-supported and motivated to provide the best possible care.
The responsiveness of the service was addressed by ensuring people could participate in the local community, with the home's location facilitating this. Residents were also supported to personalise their bedrooms, ensuring privacy for themselves and their visitors.
Finally, on how well-led the service is, leadership arrangements did not consistently ensure the safety and quality of the service. Governance systems were not effective in monitoring the quality of care and driving necessary improvements, leading to multiple breaches of regulations. While the manager showed a willingness to improve and senior leadership took concerns seriously, further progress is needed to embed and sustain these improvements.
