What inspectors found

This report provides an overview of the findings from a recent inspection of Abbotts Barton, a residential nursing home. The inspection focused on key areas of care quality to ensure residents are receiving appropriate and safe services. Overall, the home demonstrated a commitment to providing a good standard of care, though some areas were identified for further development to enhance resident well-being and safety.

Regarding safety, the home ensures staff are well-recruited and trained to recognise and respond to abuse, with robust risk assessments in place to minimise harm. However, there were instances where the administration of self-administered medicines was not consistently managed with adequate risk assessments, and temperature monitoring for medicines requiring refrigeration was not always consistently recorded.

In terms of how effective the care is, staff receive comprehensive induction and ongoing training to support their roles, and residents' rights are respected in line with the Mental Capacity Act, with decisions made in their best interests. Residents' nutritional needs are well understood and met with choice and flexibility, and they have timely access to necessary healthcare services.

On caring practices, staff are described as kind and patient, possessing a good understanding of residents' individual needs which facilitates effective communication and promotes dignity, privacy, and independence. Residents feel involved in decisions about their care, and interactions are consistently relaxed and friendly.

Looking at how responsive the service is, resident care needs are assessed and regularly reviewed, ensuring care plans are accurate and meet individual preferences. A clear complaints procedure is in place, and residents feel confident that their concerns would be heard and addressed. The home also offers a range of activities catering to different abilities and interests, available seven days a week.

Finally, concerning how well-led the service is, there is a positive and inclusive culture with good communication and staff understanding of their responsibilities. The home actively engages in quality assurance processes that drive improvements, and has established valuable links with local universities for staff development and training, contributing to safe and effective practice.
