Upton Grey Close Care Home

This report details the findings from a Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspection of Upton Grey Close Care Home, which supports adults with learning disabilities or autistic spectrum disorder. The inspection aimed to assess the quality of care provided, focusing on five key areas. It is important to note that the service has made significant improvements since the previous inspection in January 2016, addressing previous regulatory breaches. This report outlines the current status of the home, highlighting strengths and areas where care meets the needs of its residents.

On safety, the home ensures residents are protected through staff training in safeguarding and awareness of abuse. Medicines are managed securely, and the recruitment process is robust, ensuring only suitable staff are employed. There are sufficient staff with the right skills and experience to support residents and manage risks effectively, allowing for individual preferences like sleeping in or going out early.

In terms of how effective the care is, residents' needs are thoroughly assessed, leading to detailed care plans that reflect their wishes and preferences. Staff are well-trained in various areas, including managing challenging behaviours and health conditions. The service now correctly operates within the principles of the Mental Capacity Act, ensuring residents' rights are upheld. Residents receive regular health checks and support to attend appointments, with timely interventions when concerns arise, and they are supported to maintain a balanced diet.

Regarding caring practices, staff build strong relationships with residents, showing genuine care and using encouraging language. Residents are relaxed and respected, with their privacy and dignity maintained. Staff actively support residents to keep important relationships, and efforts are made to facilitate communication for those who may struggle to express themselves verbally. Visitors are always welcome, and relationships are nurtured.

In terms of responsiveness, care and support are personalised to each resident's individual needs and wishes, with staff demonstrating an ability to anticipate needs. Care plans are detailed and include information about what and who is important to the resident. Residents have access to a range of activities, both within the home and in the community, supported by the availability of cars for outings. The home also provides information in accessible formats and has a clear complaints procedure.

Finally, on how well-led the service is, the registered manager fosters an open and inclusive culture where staff feel trusted and respected. Systems for monitoring the quality and safety of the service are effective and consistently recorded, an improvement from previous findings. Care records and management documentation are up-to-date and accurately reflect the service provided. The provider and manager are aware of their responsibilities and ensure significant events are notified to the CQC.
