Inspected 17 January 2022 · report published 10 February 2022What inspectors found
Alverstoke House Nursing Home provides accommodation and nursing care for up to 29 people, accommodating 14 residents at the time of the inspection. Following previous concerns, recent inspections show that the home has made significant progress and improvements across all aspects of the service. Residents expressed that they felt safe, were happy living at the home, and spoke positively about the care they received from a dedicated and well-trained team.
When looking at safety, the home has successfully resolved previous issues regarding medication management and risk assessments. New electronic systems and regular checks ensure medicines are ordered, stored, and administered properly, while environmental and individual risks are thoroughly managed. However, staff must ensure that PRN medicines always include detailed records explaining why they were given and the outcome.
In terms of being effective, staff regularly sought consent and respected residents' choices, and people had access to sufficient food and drink. At the same time, the home received mixed feedback regarding food variety and options, which management is currently addressing following a recent food audit. Furthermore, improvements are still needed to ensure that formal mental capacity assessments and best interest decisions are consistently and accurately documented in care records.
The service proved to be caring, with residents confirming that staff knew them well, respected their wishes, and always asked for permission before assisting them. Staff treated people with kindness and supported them in a calm, unhurried atmosphere that promoted personal choice.
For responsiveness, care plans contained detailed, individualized information about each person's needs and preferences and were regularly reviewed. Residents were supported to participate in a variety of both group and one-to-one activities tailored to their personal interests.
Finally, the service is well-led, featuring a registered manager and provider who have successfully implemented effective quality assurance systems. These new processes monitor incidents, accidents, and overall care quality, ensuring the home continues to learn from past challenges and maintain ongoing improvements.
