Brookfield Residential Home provides personal care and support for up to 29 older people, including those living with dementia. Families and visiting health professionals generally speak positively about the home, noting that residents appear comfortable, enjoy the food, and are looked after by a staff team that knows them well. Relatives feel their loved ones are safe, and staff maintain a warm rapport with those living at the service.
However, the recent inspection highlighted several important areas that require attention and improvement across all reviewed aspects of the service.
Regarding safety, some individual risk assessments and care plans were outdated or lacked detail, particularly when people's health or mobility needs changed. Building maintenance and fire safety management had notable gaps, and certain medicines, topical creams, and as-needed prescriptions were not managed or recorded to the required standards.
For effectiveness, the service did not consistently follow legal frameworks regarding mental capacity and consent, and visiting restrictions remained in place longer than necessary without proper risk assessments. Some staff lacked formal training in modern dietary standardisation, and support during mealtimes occasionally fell below expected standards of dignity and individual attention.
In terms of care and compassion, staff demonstrated that they knew residents well and understood their individual needs, creating a generally pleasant and welcoming atmosphere where relatives felt their family members were genuinely cared for.
When looking at responsiveness, care plans and dietary support did not always adapt flexibly to changing needs, and there were limited resources for one-to-one activities, particularly for residents who were unable to participate in group settings.
On leadership and governance, record-keeping, building maintenance, and internal oversight systems required significant strengthening to ensure consistent, high-quality care, alongside the need to update environmental features to better support people living with dementia.
