Inspected 19 October 2023 · report published 13 December 2023What inspectors found
Arthur Court is a residential care home supporting up to 19 adults with mental health conditions, learning disabilities, or autism. Overall, feedback from residents, families, and healthcare professionals highlights a welcoming, clean, and homely environment where residents enjoy good meals, personalized rooms, and strong connections with a compassionate staff team. However, the recent inspection revealed important areas needing improvement, particularly regarding formal paperwork, risk management, and administrative oversight to ensure consistent, legally compliant care.
When it comes to safety, the home managed medications well, kept the premises clean and maintained, and employed enough trained staff who performed thorough background checks. However, inspectors found that accident and incident oversight lacked proper documentation and tracking of lessons learned. Furthermore, some specific risks were not adequately mitigated, such as missing detailed guidance for choking responses, lack of risk assessments for unguarded radiators, and incomplete records for night-time fire drills.
Support and treatment procedures were not always fully consistent or backed by robust initial assessments. While staff knew residents well and worked effectively with outside health professionals, some care plans lacked detailed guidance for specific health conditions. Additionally, documentation regarding mental capacity and legal restrictions did not always clearly reflect the least restrictive practices or timely reviews.
The atmosphere within the home is distinctly compassionate and person-centered. Residents, relatives, and visiting professionals all praised the kind daily interactions and genuine warmth shown by the team. Staff take the time to build meaningful relationships, support individual independence, and ensure people feel respected and well cared for.
Day-to-day operations and choices promoted independence, with residents actively involved in meal planning, daily routines, and personalizing their living spaces. The service maintained open communication with families and encouraged people to stay connected with their loved ones and local communities.
Management and governance systems require closer attention moving forward. Internal checks and audits failed to identify several of the record-keeping and safety issues noted during the inspection. Although leadership maintains a positive culture and staff feel well-supported, formal oversight procedures need strengthening to ensure care plans, risk assessments, and legal frameworks are properly documented and updated.
