Ayletts House is a care home for up to 27 older people, some of whom may have dementia-related needs. This report summarises an inspection that assessed the service across five key areas: safety, effectiveness, caring, responsiveness, and leadership. The inspection aimed to ensure the home is meeting regulatory requirements and providing a good quality of care. Overall, the service was found to be consistently well-managed and providing good outcomes for its residents.
Regarding safety, robust systems are in place to protect residents from harm, with staff demonstrating a good understanding of safeguarding procedures. While there was a concern raised about night-time support that the manager immediately began investigating, staffing levels were generally found to be sufficient, and recruitment processes are thorough. Medicines are managed safely, and the home is clean and adheres to infection control practices.
In terms of how effective the care is, residents receive support that aligns with best practice guidance, supported by comprehensive assessments. Staff are well-trained and receive regular supervision, with positive feedback on the quality of training. Residents are supported to maintain a balanced diet, with opportunities for choice, and the home works collaboratively with healthcare professionals to ensure consistent and timely care. An area for development identified is improving the environment with better signage and orientation clues, particularly for residents with dementia.
The caring aspect of the service is highlighted by staff's compassionate and respectful interactions with residents, who feel relaxed and well-treated. Staff know residents well, respecting their preferences and personal histories, and encouraging independence. Residents feel listened to and involved in decisions about their care, with regular resident meetings contributing to their sense of being valued.
On responsiveness, care plans are personalised to meet individual needs and preferences, and a wellness programme has been introduced, including mindfulness sessions. A wide range of activities are available, catering to different interests, and residents have access to a minibus for community outings. The service handles complaints and concerns appropriately, with a recent concern regarding night-time care being actively investigated. Arrangements are in place to respect residents' wishes for end-of-life care.
Finally, the service is well-led, with a supportive management style that fosters strong teamwork. Staff understand their roles and responsibilities, and regular audits are conducted to monitor service quality. The management team is committed to openness and honesty, and the home actively engages with residents and their relatives through surveys and regular meetings. The service also actively seeks innovative ways to improve care, such as the mindfulness programme, and builds strong partnerships with external organisations and community groups.
