Inspected 25 March 2021 · report published 25 June 2021What inspectors found
This report provides an overview of the recent Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspection at Bon Secours. The inspection focused on ensuring the safety and leadership of the service, as well as evaluating how effective, caring, and responsive the care provided is. Families looking for a care home will find important details on how the service is performing across these key areas, highlighting both strengths and areas where improvements are being made to ensure the best possible care for residents.
On safety, while residents generally feel secure and the premises are clean, there were concerns about staff being shared between two locations, which was not in line with current guidance. Although medication management and storage were found to be safe, there was a need to improve the recording of "as and when needed" medication. Some care plans lacked specific details regarding epilepsy management, which has since been addressed.
Regarding effective care, residents receive support tailored to their individual needs and communication preferences, with staff receiving relevant training. Risk assessments are in place to guide care, and efforts are made to promote independence and new skills.
In terms of caring practices, residents expressed happiness and satisfaction with the staff, feeling well understood and supported. The staff demonstrate a good understanding of how to recognise and respond to safeguarding concerns.
The service's responsiveness is shown in how it supports residents to have maximum choice and control over their lives, promoting their dignity and human rights. Residents feel informed about their care planning and their views are sought.
Concerning the well-led aspect, while the registered manager has a vision for improvement and works with external professionals, there were significant issues with timely notification of incidents to the CQC. Systems to monitor and improve the quality of the service need strengthening, particularly in identifying and addressing concerns proactively, as some issues were found to be present in other services managed by the same team.
