Inspected 28 November 2022 · report published 19 January 2023What inspectors found
Bramley House is a small residential care home providing personal care and accommodation for up to 16 older people, including those living with dementia, a learning disability, or autism. At the time of our visit, 15 people lived in the adapted building. The service aims to create a warm, welcoming environment where residents feel at home, maintain their independence, and receive personalized support tailored to their individual needs, preferences, and life histories.
The service maintains a safe environment where residents feel secure and protected from harm. Staff are well-trained in safeguarding procedures, and all necessary safety checks on the premises and equipment are regularly carried out. Risks to individual well-being are properly assessed and monitored, infection control measures are strictly followed, and medicines are managed safely and securely.
Care is delivered effectively by a competent and thoroughly inducted team. Staff understand dietary needs, assist with meals in a dignified manner, and ensure good access to external healthcare professionals. However, we found that the formal principles of mental capacity legislation were not always fully embedded into practice regarding specific decision-making and best-interest records.
Residents are treated with genuine warmth, kindness, and deep respect. Staff know individuals very well, approach them with compassion, and pay attention to small details that brighten their day. People are encouraged to express their views, and staff take the time to offer reassurance and comforting engagement whenever needed.
The service is highly responsive to individual needs, offering personalized care and meaningful activities aligned with personal interests and hobbies. Residents are supported to go out, welcome visitors whenever they wish, and maintain important links with family and friends. While people received the daily care they required, we noted that care plans were not always updated promptly when needs changed, and internal audits had not monitored this effectively.
Leadership at the home is positive, visible, and approachable. The management team is committed to continuously developing the service and providing new opportunities for residents. Staff feel well-supported by management, and there is a strong, transparent culture focused on delivering a homely and person-centered experience for everyone living at the house.
