Brierfields is a residential care home providing personal care to 15 people, some of whom live with dementia. This recent inspection report highlights the home's commitment to quality care, with positive findings across all key areas. The premises are noted as clean, homely, and well-maintained, contributing to a comfortable environment for residents. Systems are in place to monitor the quality and safety of care, and the home fosters an open and supportive culture.
Regarding safety, staff demonstrate a good awareness of safeguarding procedures and how to raise concerns, with steps taken to minimise risks. While medicines are generally managed safely, some documentation required review, and a recommendation has been made for improvement in this area. Recruitment processes are robust, ensuring staff are suitable to work with vulnerable individuals, and staffing levels are sufficient to meet residents' needs. Infection control measures are in place, with staff using personal protective equipment.
In terms of effectiveness, residents' needs are thoroughly assessed and reviewed, with involvement from individuals and their relatives in care planning. Staff are described as competent and receive ongoing training and support. Residents are supported to maintain a balanced diet, with preferences considered and meals served warm, although record-keeping for specific food and drink intake could be more precise. The home effectively collaborates with other healthcare professionals and agencies to ensure consistent and timely care.
The caring aspect of the service is strongly evident, with staff developing genuine, trusting relationships with residents. They are consistently described as caring, kind, and respectful, taking time to understand individual needs and preferences. Residents feel comfortable and well-treated, with staff actively promoting their privacy, dignity, and independence. While staff are dedicated, the absence of formal group meetings with residents and relatives over the past year is noted as an area for reinstatement.
Responsiveness is also highlighted, with residents supported to have maximum choice and control over their lives, aided by staff acting in their best interests. The service adapts to changing needs, and staff are knowledgeable about residents' wishes, likes, and dislikes. Communication with residents and their families about care and any significant changes is a focus.
Finally, the service is well-led. The provider and deputy manager have implemented governance systems that provide oversight and monitoring. Learning from incidents is incorporated into practice, and the management team responds appropriately to accidents and incidents. While the registered manager was absent, the deputy manager received support from other registered managers within the provider's organisation. Improvements have been made following the previous inspection's concerns, demonstrating a commitment to positive change.
