Inspected 15 October 2020 · report published 6 November 2020What inspectors found
Broadmead Rest Home in Berkshire provides accommodation and personal care for up to 38 older people in a modern, recently extended environment featuring en-suite wet rooms, a jacuzzi, and a secure garden. Following a previous inspection, the home has successfully maintained its overall standards and addressed past issues. The recent evaluation highlights a welcoming atmosphere where residents and visitors feel supported, though a few minor administrative and procedural areas require ongoing attention.
When it comes to safety, the home maintains sufficient staffing levels and safely recruits employees through thorough background checks. Risk assessments and accident logs are properly managed, and residents feel secure in the building. However, inspectors found a few minor recording shortfalls regarding certain controlled medicines and stock counts, and the laundry area briefly failed to follow strict clean-to-dirty infection control workflows until management took immediate corrective action.
The service is effective in meeting daily health and personal needs, supported by regular staff training and active involvement of healthcare professionals. Staff understand the Mental Capacity Act, appropriately assessing residents' ability to consent and involving families in best-interest decisions. While most aspects of dining and nutrition are handled well, feedback on the food itself was mixed, with some residents noting that meals can sometimes be overly fancy rather than simple home cooking.
Residents are treated with genuine warmth, dignity, and compassion by a staff team that builds strong, positive relationships with them. Care is delivered in a highly personalized and responsive manner, ensuring individual preferences and choices are respected throughout the day. People enjoy a wide variety of activities and entertainment options tailored to their interests, whether in communal areas, outdoors, or in their own rooms.
Leadership at the home is active and transparent, with a registered manager in post who oversees quality assurance systems effectively. Management responds promptly whenever shortfalls are identified, implementing quick fixes and staff retraining. Although a couple of relatives expressed minor frustration regarding the front door security code policy, overall leadership maintains an open dialogue with residents and families to continuously improve the service.
