Inspected 9 October 2020 · report published 13 November 2020What inspectors found
Bryn Haven is a residential care home that provides personal care and specializes in supporting older people living with dementia. This targeted inspection by the Care Quality Commission specifically examined how the home manages risks related to resident falls, alongside a review of infection prevention and safety measures. Overall, the home supports residents to have maximum choice and control over their lives in a least restrictive way, though inspectors identified important areas requiring attention regarding management oversight and incident investigations.
Regarding safety, risks to residents had been assessed and reviewed, with specific individual mobility assessments recently conducted to identify those at high risk of falls. Staff cared for residents appropriately after a fall, and equipment such as sensor mats was in place where required. The home also demonstrated robust infection control and prevention measures, ensuring proper management of Covid-19 risks, PPE usage, testing, and social distancing.
For effectiveness, staff received proper training in moving, handling, and falls prevention to support residents safely. However, the report highlights that appropriate referrals to other healthcare professionals following repeated falls were not always made in a timely manner.
In terms of being caring, staff supported residents to maintain choice and control, and ensured people were cared for appropriately after experiencing a fall.
When looking at how the service responds to needs, care planning included reviewing risk assessments and updating them following a fall. Yet, the report notes that aftercare details, professional visits, and subsequent monitoring were not always captured in sufficient detail on the digital care management system.
On the leadership front, the newly appointed general manager demonstrated extensive knowledge of falls prevention strategies and a strong commitment to improvement. However, inspectors found gaps in manager oversight, noting that the management team had not consistently investigated incidents, learned from them, or acted promptly on recommendations following concerns raised by the Coroner.
