What inspectors found

Cawood House in Stockport is a purpose-built care home providing accommodation and personal care for older people and those living with dementia. During our visit, residents, relatives, and visiting professionals shared highly positive feedback about the management, the supportive staff team, and the overall quality of care provided in a clean and dementia-friendly environment. While previous concerns regarding management oversight and infection control have been successfully resolved, the latest inspection highlights a few specific areas for ongoing attention and improvement.

When examining safety, we found that certain aspects require closer attention. While recruitment, safeguarding procedures, and medicine administration audits were generally well-managed, the transition to electronic record systems resulted in minor omissions, such as missing details for as-needed medicines and pain patch locations on digital medication charts. Additionally, staff gave conflicting information regarding laundry segregation procedures, and the frequent use of loud door alarms throughout the home should be reviewed to minimize any potential disturbance to residents.

For effectiveness, the home performs well by conducting thorough initial assessments and working closely with local healthcare providers, including weekly GP visits and prompt referrals to dieticians and speech therapists. Staff receive comprehensive inductions, regular supervisions, and ongoing training, while the physical environment has been thoughtfully adapted with contrasting colors, memory boxes, and photographic door aids to support residents with dementia.

The caring category reflects a compassionate culture where staff treat residents with genuine kindness, dignity, and respect. Residents and their families consistently praised the staff for being wonderful and attentive, and the home holds a Dignity in Care award recognizing their strong commitment to promoting personal independence and privacy.

In terms of being responsive, the service tailors care effectively to individual needs and preferences. Residents benefit from a dedicated full-time activities coordinator who organizes a mix of group and personalized events, and clear pathways are in place for managing complaints and planning sensitive end-of-life care.

Finally, the well-led category demonstrates strong, stable management. The registered manager fosters an open, friendly culture, maintains effective oversight through regular audits, and ensures the service works transparently in partnership with staff, families, and external agencies.
