Inspected 18 January 2022 · report published 3 March 2022What inspectors found
This report details the findings of an unannounced inspection at Camberley Cottage, a service providing personal care for up to six individuals with physical and learning disabilities. The inspection found that the service continues to provide a good standard of care, focusing on promoting independence and inclusion. Residents are supported by a sufficient number of skilled staff who are knowledgeable about safeguarding and emergency procedures. The service aims to ensure residents can live as ordinary a life as possible.
On safety, staff are well-trained in safeguarding and take appropriate steps to manage risks, such as using sensor mats for individuals with mobility issues and learning from incidents to prevent recurrence. The environment is clean, accessible, and well-maintained, with robust medication management and emergency planning in place.
In terms of how effective the care is, staff receive comprehensive training relevant to residents' needs, including specific areas like autism and epilepsy. Regular supervision and appraisals support staff performance, and the service adheres to the principles of the Mental Capacity Act 2005, ensuring residents' legal rights are upheld. Residents are well-supported to access necessary healthcare professionals, and their dietary preferences are catered for in a varied, home-cooked menu.
Regarding caring practices, residents reported feeling happy and well-supported, with staff known for their kindness and positive relationships. Dignity and privacy are consistently respected, and residents are encouraged in their independence through involvement in daily routines and maintaining relationships with loved ones. Communication is understood and responded to effectively, even for those with complex needs.
In terms of responsiveness, care is personalised and detailed in support plans, reflecting individual preferences and histories. Residents have keyworkers who support them in achieving personal goals, and there is a commitment to developing structured keyworker meetings. A wide range of activities are available and enjoyed by residents, tailored to their interests, with plans to further expand opportunities, including potential holidays and work experiences.
Finally, the service is well-led, with systems in place for quality monitoring and continuous improvement. Both residents and staff are involved in the home’s operations, and relatives play an active role. The manager has a clear vision for development, including the implementation of electronic records, and staff feel valued and supported by the management team. While the report highlights many positive findings, the manager plans to further structure keyworker meetings and expand activity opportunities.
