Inspected 11 March 2021 · report published 17 April 2021What inspectors found
Charlton Grange Care Home in Shepperton is a purpose-built, two-storey facility providing accommodation, nursing, and personal care for up to 62 older individuals, including those living with dementia. At the time of the inspection in March 2021, there were 57 residents living at the home. This targeted inspection specifically examined how the service managed infection prevention and control practices during the pandemic, focusing on keeping residents safe while maintaining their overall wellbeing and access to essential care and social activities.
The home maintained strong infection control measures by implementing enhanced cleaning routines for equipment and frequently touched areas, which were actively monitored by the management team. Staff completed targeted training on infection prevention and control alongside proper personal protective equipment usage, and team meetings kept everyone updated on COVID-19 protocols. Visitors followed strict safety protocols, including temperature checks, screening questionnaires, negative lateral flow test results before entry, and the mandatory use of protective equipment.
Residents maintained continuous access to necessary healthcare professionals throughout the pandemic, benefiting from video consultations with GPs alongside face-to-face appointments for physiotherapy and mental health reviews.
To ensure continuity of care and eliminate outside infection risks, the home relied entirely on its own permanent staff team without using any agency workers, ensuring familiar faces for the residents.
During periods of required self-isolation, staff actively prevented social isolation by spending dedicated one-to-one time with residents in their rooms, while reopened communal lounges and dining areas were arranged to support social distancing during small group activities.
New admissions were handled securely by requiring recent negative test results prior to arrival followed by a designated period of self-isolation within the home.
