What inspectors found

This inspection report from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) for Chorlton Place Nursing Home highlights key areas regarding the quality of care provided. The report covers findings across five critical domains: safety, effectiveness, care, responsiveness, and leadership. While some aspects of the home's operations are noted positively, the inspection identified several areas requiring significant improvement, particularly concerning medication management, staff-to-resident ratios, and the overall approach to dignity and respect. The CQC's findings aim to provide families with a clear picture of the home's performance.

On safety, the report indicates that medicines were not always managed consistently, posing a risk to residents' health. There were concerns about the accuracy of electronic medicine records and instances where medications were not administered at the correct times. Staff also did not always follow good infection control practices, though essential personal protective equipment was available. Recruitment records did not always demonstrate adherence to policies, and while some people felt safe, others noted insufficient staffing levels to meet their needs promptly.

In terms of how effective the care is, the service generally achieved good outcomes for residents. People's needs were consistently assessed and met, with staff working collaboratively with external health professionals. Residents' rooms were personalised, and while some parts of the environment needed updating, essential adaptations were in place. Staff received appropriate training, and residents were supported to maintain their nutrition and hydration, with good access to healthcare services.

When considering how caring the service is, the report found that residents did not always feel well-supported or treated with dignity and respect. Some residents reported that staff sometimes spoke abruptly, and personal preferences regarding care were not always considered. Staff did not always have sufficient time to engage in meaningful conversations or respond promptly to call bells, and privacy was not always maintained.

Regarding how responsive the service is, people's needs were met through good organisation and delivery of care. Care plans were developed to ensure residents had choice and control, and while electronic care plans were noted as less detailed than previous paper versions, staff generally knew residents and their individual needs well. Residents felt able to raise concerns, and while activities were not always individualised, efforts were made to engage with everyone.

Finally, on how well-led the service is, the report identifies areas where quality assurance processes had not consistently identified the issues found during the inspection. While the registered manager was spoken of very positively, existing quality assurance systems did not always effectively identify shortfalls in safety and care delivery. There were recommendations made to review staffing dependency tools and update the environment to better meet the needs of residents, especially those living with dementia.
