What inspectors found

Here is a summary of the CQC report for Gabriel House, written in plain English for families choosing a care home:

This report from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) provides an overview of the inspection visit to Gabriel House. It assesses how well the home supports its residents, focusing on key areas of care. While the report identifies strengths in how residents are treated and how their care is planned, it also highlights specific areas where improvements are needed to ensure the highest standards are consistently met. The inspection aimed to ensure residents receive safe, effective, compassionate, responsive, and well-led care.

On safety, while residents generally feel safe and medicines are managed well, there were some concerns with staff recruitment processes, meaning not all checks were fully robust. Additionally, some safeguarding concerns were not reported as promptly as they should have been, though the new manager is actively addressing this. Some areas of the building require maintenance and redecoration, with plans already in motion to address this.

In terms of how effective the care is, residents receive person-centred support and have their dietary needs met. Mandatory training is mostly up-to-date, with a new induction process for staff. However, the induction process for agency and experienced staff could be strengthened to ensure they have all the necessary information from the start. The physical environment of communal areas needs some attention to make them more personalised and well-maintained.

The service is caring, with staff demonstrating kindness, dignity, and respect towards residents. Residents are well-supported and involved in their care plans, with staff knowing their individual needs and preferences. Privacy and dignity are respected, and residents are encouraged to maintain their independence and access the community.

Regarding how responsive the service is, care plans are detailed and personalised, ensuring residents have choices in their daily lives and support. Communication needs are well met, and residents are supported to maintain relationships and engage in activities that are important to them. The home is also receptive to feedback and concerns.

In the area of being well-led, the management team is aware of the areas needing improvement and is actively working on implementing changes and developing a plan to address outstanding issues. While recent changes in leadership and systems are still being embedded, staff feel supported and know how to raise concerns, which are taken seriously. The service has shown responsiveness to complaints and concerns.
