Inspected 27 July 2022 · report published 27 August 2022What inspectors found
Colbury House is a nursing home providing personal and nursing care for up to 58 older people, including those living with dementia. At the time of the inspection, 47 people were living in the adapted building across two floors, featuring shared living spaces and accessible outdoor areas. The home is undergoing a comprehensive refurbishment programme, and both residents and their families note positive changes to the environment and overall care quality.
Residents feel safe and protected from avoidable harm, supported by staff who understand how to identify and report abuse. While most people felt staffing levels were sufficient, some feedback indicated that staff were very busy and that call bells could occasionally be slow to be answered. Medicines are generally managed safely, though some initial topical cream and medication administration records required additional details that were promptly updated during the visit.
The home delivers effective care tailored to individual needs and choices, supported by thorough staff inductions, regular supervision, and relevant training. Residents enjoy a varied menu with fresh food and individual dietary requirements accommodated, though some occasional issues with meat texture were noted. The environment is generally clean and well-maintained through ongoing renovations, though inspectors identified minor maintenance points, such as a stained armchair and a poorly sealed old shower head bracket, which management agreed to address immediately.
Staff are caring, enthusiastic, and respectful of residents' privacy, dignity, and independence. Care plans provide comprehensive information about personal preferences, and staff take time to build meaningful relationships with those they support. Families feel confident in the compassionate approach of the team.
Care is highly responsive to personal needs, ensuring residents receive tailored support and are actively encouraged to make daily choices. People are supported to maintain hobbies and relationships, and families feel well-informed about any changes in health or care needs.
The service is well-led by a supportive management team that monitors service quality and safety effectively. Staff feel valued, supervised, and well-equipped for their roles. While legal frameworks regarding mental capacity and best interests are generally followed, inspectors found that one resident using a lap belt restraint lacked a formal best interest decision document, an omission that management corrected immediately upon being notified.
