This CQC report provides an overview of Forest Court Nursing Home based on an inspection conducted in February 2023. The inspection assesses the home's performance across five key areas: safety, effectiveness, caring, responsiveness, and leadership. The report details specific findings and observations made by the inspectors, aiming to give families a clear picture of the care provided and identify areas of strength and opportunities for improvement. The report acknowledges progress made since the previous inspection, highlighting improvements in several areas while also noting where further attention is needed to ensure the highest standards of care.
Regarding the safety of the service, while residents generally feel safe and there are sufficient staff, some improvements are needed. For example, more robust procedures for checking staff employment histories are required, and there were some gaps in recording the application of prescribed creams. Additionally, while risk assessments are in place, enhancements could benefit residents living with diabetes. However, staff have received safeguarding training, and the home is kept clean with effective infection control measures.
In terms of how effective the care is, residents' needs are met through the care provided. The report notes that people are supported to have maximum choice and control in their lives, and staff operate in their best interests. The systems and policies within the service support this approach effectively, ensuring that care plans are followed and residents are cared for as prescribed, with a focus on promoting independence and well-being.
The caring aspect of the service has seen significant improvement. Residents and their relatives consistently describe staff as kind, compassionate, and respectful, with a clear understanding of individual preferences and needs. Staff are observed to treat residents with dignity, respecting their privacy and encouraging independence in daily life. The interactions between staff and residents are overwhelmingly positive and friendly, fostering a welcoming and supportive environment.
Concerning responsiveness, the service is working to support people with the least restrictive approach possible. Staff are trained in the Mental Capacity Act and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards, and there are systems in place to manage these processes. The home facilitates visiting in line with current guidance, and accidents and incidents are reviewed monthly to learn lessons and improve future care delivery.
Finally, the leadership of the service is strong. The provider maintains an open and honest approach to care delivery, and staff feel supported by management, enjoying their work. Accidents and incidents are reported and investigated, although there is a need for improvement in the timely submission of required notifications to the CQC. The management team demonstrates a commitment to quality and continuous improvement within the home.
