This report summarises an inspection of Corner Lodge, a care home providing accommodation and personal care for up to 48 older people, including those living with dementia. The inspection focused on the key questions of Safe and Well-led, following concerns raised. Overall, the inspection found that the service is performing well, with a positive atmosphere and dedicated staff. The report highlights areas where the home excels in ensuring residents' safety and well-being, as well as its commitment to continuous improvement and strong leadership.
On safety, the home has robust systems to protect residents from harm, including effective safeguarding procedures and risk assessments. Staffing levels were found to be sufficient to meet immediate needs, and call bells were responded to promptly. While medication management was generally safe, a minor recording error was identified and addressed. Importantly, infection prevention and control measures were assured, with the service well-prepared for managing outbreaks. A key area for development noted in the safe section is the need to ensure all staff personnel files are complete with full work histories, although newer recruits had these in place.
In terms of how effective the care is, the report indicates that residents' needs were well-met, with staff receiving appropriate training. The service also demonstrated effective collaboration with external healthcare professionals.
The caring aspect of the service was highlighted through positive interactions observed between staff and residents, with a staff member noting that "All the staff are kind and caring we do our best for the people that live here." Relatives also expressed satisfaction with the care provided and communication from the home.
Regarding responsiveness, the service showed a commitment to keeping relatives informed and had adapted to visitor needs by adding a new conservatory. Feedback from surveys was analysed to drive improvements.
Finally, on being well-led, Corner Lodge has a clear management structure with open communication channels for staff and relatives. The management team actively monitors service quality through various checks and is committed to learning from incidents. The introduction of a new electronic care plan system and ongoing staff training further demonstrate a proactive approach to improving care delivery.
