What inspectors found
This report summarises the findings of a recent inspection at 2, 3 and 4 Nightingale Close, a service providing accommodation and personal care for up to 18 individuals with learning disabilities and potential mental health needs. The inspection assessed the service against key areas, and the overall findings indicate a consistently good standard of care. The report highlights the dedication of the staff and management in ensuring residents' well-being and a positive living environment.
Regarding safety, residents and their families feel the home is a secure place. Staff are well-trained to recognise and report any signs of abuse, and robust systems are in place for assessing and managing risks. While equipment like fire systems and manual handling aids are regularly checked, there was a minor point raised about weight charts not having a dedicated action column, which the manager has moved to address. Staffing levels are managed flexibly to meet individual needs, and recruitment processes are thorough, ensuring suitable individuals are employed.
In terms of how effective the care is, residents are supported by well-trained and competent staff. The service operates in line with the Mental Capacity Act and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards, ensuring decisions are made in residents' best interests. Residents are encouraged to make choices about their daily lives, and staff receive ongoing training and support. A suggestion was made to include photographs of hoists in care plans for clearer guidance, which the manager has agreed to implement.
The care provided is noted as being consistently caring. Residents are happy with the service, with staff treating them with dignity and respect, fostering a relaxed and often humorous atmosphere. The service actively encourages social interaction among residents and supports them in maintaining contact with family and friends, with staff acting as keyworkers to facilitate this.
Looking at responsiveness, the service is attentive to residents' evolving needs and concerns. While care plans are generally person-centred and informative, one bungalow's records were found to be less consistently organised, an issue the manager has taken immediate steps to rectify. Residents are encouraged to set achievable goals, and their preferences are actively incorporated into care plans. The home also has a clear and accessible complaints procedure, with residents and families feeling comfortable raising any concerns.
Finally, the service is well-led. A registered manager is in place, supported by an additional manager for one of the bungalows. Staff report feeling well-supported and appreciate the visible presence and approachability of the management team. Regular audits are conducted to monitor service quality, and feedback from residents, families, and professionals has been overwhelmingly positive. Minor issues noted were addressed promptly by management, demonstrating a commitment to continuous improvement.
