Downing House is a residential care home for up to 25 people aged 55 and over, some with dementia. This report reflects the findings of an inspection conducted on December 17, 2019, which assessed the service's performance across five key areas. Overall, the inspection found that Downing House is performing well and has made significant improvements since the previous inspection.
On safety, the home ensures that risks to people's health and safety are well managed through thorough risk assessments and staff training in safeguarding. Medicines are administered safely with robust checks in place, and infection control measures are effective, keeping the environment clean and free from hazards. The home has learned from incidents, implementing changes to prevent recurrence and ensuring staff are recruited safely.
In terms of how effective the care is, Downing House has made notable improvements. People's needs are assessed comprehensively, and care plans are developed to meet these needs, with staff receiving appropriate training and support. Residents are supported to maintain a balanced diet with choices available, and their healthcare needs are met through timely referrals to various health professionals. The environment has been enhanced with brighter lighting and improved communal spaces.
The care provided at Downing House is noted as being consistently kind and respectful. Staff build positive relationships, knowing residents' needs and preferences, and actively involving them in their care planning. People feel their privacy and dignity are maintained, and they are supported to remain as independent as possible, with no indication of discrimination.
Regarding responsiveness, Downing House ensures that care plans are personalised and updated according to changing needs. Residents have opportunities to engage in activities that are relevant to them, and while the absence of an activities co-ordinator has impacted the range of activities, plans are in place to recruit for this role and further develop the programme. The service has an effective complaints procedure, and concerns are addressed to the satisfaction of individuals and their families.
Finally, on how well-led the service is, Downing House demonstrates extremely positive leadership. The registered manager is highly regarded by residents, relatives, and staff for being caring and approachable. Audits and monitoring procedures are used effectively to drive improvements, and the manager actively uses available resources to enhance staff practice. People are supported to have maximum choice and control over their lives in the least restrictive way possible.
