What inspectors found

Eachstep Blackley provides personal and nursing care for up to 60 residents across five separate households, with dedicated spaces designed to support individuals living with dementia. During the recent inspection, residents and their families spoke warmly about the welcoming atmosphere, the dedication of the team, and the overall quality of support provided by the staff.

When looking at safety, the home maintains clean premises and robust recruitment procedures, though inspectors noted that some prescribed medicines were occasionally out of stock due to communication issues with pharmacies. Additionally, while staffing levels met basic requirements, some shifts offered little flexibility, leading to busy staff and occasional delays in assisting residents at mealtimes. Maintenance records also highlighted a few minor pending repairs for emergency lighting and a fire door.

The care provided is clinically effective, supported by regular visits from external healthcare professionals and thorough staff training programs. The home achieved the highest possible rating for food hygiene, although residents and relatives shared mixed feedback regarding the daily menu, with some families choosing to bring in favorite meals from home.

The environment is spacious and well-adapted for mobility, featuring dementia-friendly signage, though certain memory boxes outside bedrooms were left unused. Staff consistently operate within legal frameworks for mental capacity and best-interest decision-making, ensuring residents retain maximum choice and control over their daily routines.

Interactions throughout the home are characterized by genuine warmth, patience, and respect. Residents and visitors confirmed that staff treat individuals with dignity, maintain open communication, and make loved ones feel truly welcome at any time of day.

Care planning is generally detailed and involves residents and families where possible, supported by modern electronic systems. However, inspectors found that some handwritten monitoring charts and care plans were not always kept fully up to date, and Wi-Fi reliability issues occasionally impacted digital record-keeping.

Leadership is visible and approachable, with managers actively conducting regular audits, safety huddles, and team meetings. Staff feel well-supported by the management structure and each other, and families expressed total confidence in raising any issues or concerns directly with the leadership team should the need arise.
