Ebbsfleet House is a specialist residential care home providing personal care for up to five adults with autism or learning disabilities who may experience anxious or emotional behaviour. The home focuses on helping residents live fulfilling lives with a strong emphasis on choice, independence, and community involvement. Since the previous inspection, residents have successfully achieved new goals, engaged in local activities such as horse-riding and sports, and benefited from reduced restrictions and physical interventions.
The home maintains a safe environment where staff understand how to protect residents from abuse and manage risks effectively. Staff use positive behaviour support strategies and picture references to help residents navigate potentially anxious situations, such as community visits or healthcare appointments, and incidents of physical restraint have successfully decreased. While safety is well-managed, communal areas inside the house can sometimes become crowded and cause anxiety, though staff actively use the large garden and sensory room to provide quieter spaces.
Care is effective and tailored to individual needs through thorough initial and ongoing assessments. Staff receive comprehensive training, including specialized courses on crisis avoidance and positive support, ensuring they feel confident in their roles. Residents are actively involved in choosing their meals and maintaining a balanced diet, and the home collaborates closely with external healthcare professionals to support residents through medical procedures and weight management.
The service is notably caring, fostering warm and respectful relationships between residents and staff. Staff demonstrate genuine affection, treat residents with dignity, and use personalized communication methods like picture cards and easy-read materials to ensure individuals can express their views and make daily choices. Residents are supported to maintain their personal appearance, build independence, and celebrate personal milestones.
Care is highly responsive to individual needs, with staff working patiently to help residents revisit activities that previously caused anxiety, such as shopping or dining out. Detailed communication guides and social stories are used effectively to prepare residents for new experiences or health appointments. Although the registered manager left shortly before the inspection, the deputy manager applied to formally register and ensured continuity of oversight.
The home is well-led by a positive and passionate management team that promotes a culture of mutual respect. Staff report high levels of support, effective training, and clear guidance, contributing to stable staffing levels and strong morale. Comprehensive incident monitoring and regular audits ensure that lessons are learned when challenges arise, helping the service continuously improve the quality of life for everyone living there.
