What inspectors found

Ernest Luff Homes in Walton On The Naze is a purpose-built residential care home supporting up to 28 older people, including those living with dementia. The home fosters a warm, family-oriented atmosphere with a strong emphasis on community connections and individual choice. During the unannounced inspection in July 2019, the service was accommodating 25 residents, with feedback highlighting motivated staff, clean surroundings, and person-centred care.

Residents consistently reported feeling safe, supported by staff trained in safeguarding, proper risk management, and secure medicine handling. The environment was well-maintained and clean, though the inspection did note that infection control measures required temporary visitor restrictions on the day of the visit due to a gastroenteritis bug affecting two people.

Care outcomes were strong, supported by pre-admission assessments, specialist dementia training for staff, and well-monitored nutrition. Staff worked closely with external healthcare professionals and respected legal frameworks regarding mental capacity.

Interactions between staff and residents were characterized by genuine warmth, kindness, and respect for personal dignity. Staff actively promoted independence and ensured that visitors were normally welcomed at any time, subject to the temporary infection control restrictions noted during the visit.

Care plans were developed in consultation with residents and their families, ensuring flexible daily routines and a rich program of planned and spontaneous activities. Residents had full control over their schedules, including mealtimes, waking hours, and how they spent their day.

Leadership was visible and inspiring, with a registered manager who acted as a positive role model and drove continuous improvement. Staff reported feeling proud of their work and well-supported through regular audits, feedback opportunities, and strong teamwork.
