This report summarises the findings of an unannounced inspection conducted at Forty4 on December 13, 2017, and January 5, 2018. The home provides accommodation and personal care for up to six individuals with learning disabilities, physical disabilities, autism, and/or mental health needs. The inspection assessed the service against CQC's five key questions, focusing on whether it is safe, effective, caring, responsive, and well-led. Overall, the inspection found that the service meets required standards and supports people well.
On safety, people and their relatives felt secure at the home, with staff well-trained in safeguarding and robust recruitment processes in place. There were sufficient staff to meet needs, and medicines were managed safely. Risk assessments were conducted and reviewed, with contingency plans in place for emergencies.
Regarding how effective the care is, staff were knowledgeable about residents' health needs and collaborated effectively with health professionals. The home followed the Mental Capacity Act, and staff received regular supervision and training to ensure they had the necessary skills. People were involved in menu planning, and the premises were adapted for accessibility.
In terms of caring, staff were consistently described as kind, respectful, and understanding of residents' individual needs and preferences. They listened to residents, responded with compassion, and helped to resolve conflicts. The home fostered a calm and relaxed atmosphere, with staff actively supporting residents to maintain their relationships.
On responsiveness, residents and their relatives were involved in care planning, with detailed support plans in place. The home met the Accessible Information Standards, using visual aids to help residents understand information and make informed choices. Feedback was sought and used to improve the service, and clear complaints procedures were available.
Finally, concerning how well-led the service is, there was a positive and open culture within the home. Staff felt supported by the registered manager, who understood their responsibilities and incident reporting requirements. Systems were in place to monitor and assess the quality and safety of care, and there was a commitment to continuous improvement.
