Inspected 22 November 2022 · report published 21 January 2023What inspectors found
Gibralter Crescent is a residential care home providing personal care and support for up to six individuals, including people with learning disabilities and those who are deaf or hearing impaired. At the time of this inspection, five people were living at the home, supported by a dedicated team. The service focuses on respecting individual routines, promoting independence, and ensuring residents can maintain strong connections with their families and local communities.
When it comes to safety, residents are protected by robust monitoring systems and staff who clearly understand how to recognise and report abuse. Risk assessments are detailed and regularly updated to help people live as independently as possible, while medicine records are generally well-managed despite a minor procedural slip that was fixed immediately. However, visitors and staff did note that some areas of the house are looking a bit tired and in need of redecoration and timely repairs, which the management is actively addressing.
The care provided is effective and tailored to each person's specific needs, supported by thorough assessments and good cooperation with external healthcare professionals like dietary nurses. Staff receive solid inductions and training, though some ongoing training modules faced slight delays during a transition to a new digital application. Residents are encouraged to maintain daily life skills, such as preparing their own food, and staff understand how to communicate effectively using tools like British Sign Language and Makaton.
The atmosphere at the home is genuinely caring and inclusive, heavily supported by the fact that many staff members and all residents share experiences with being deaf or hearing impaired. Staff treat individuals with warmth, protect their privacy carefully, and know their personal preferences and communication styles exceptionally well. Relatives frequently praise the approachable nature of the team and the genuine affection staff show toward the residents.
The service remains responsive to individual choices and changing needs, actively involving residents and their families in regular reviews and meetings. Staff use personalized approaches and communication aids to give people maximum control over their daily lives, from choosing meals to planning activities. Prospective residents are also carefully introduced through a thoughtful transition period to ensure they are compatible with the current household.
Leadership at the home is strong, with a registered manager who actively monitors the quality of support and maintains effective relationships with outside agencies and families. Recruitment is handled safely with thorough background checks, and the manager has taken focused action to stabilize staffing challenges using consistent team members. Staff members feel well-supported in their roles, share ideas openly to improve the service, and are passionate about delivering personalized care.
