This CQC report provides an overview of Hargrave House following an inspection on 16 April 2019. The inspection assessed five key areas: Safe, Effective, Caring, Responsive, and Well-led. Overall, the service was found to be meeting regulatory requirements and providing a good quality of care. The report highlights the dedication of the staff, the positive relationships formed with residents, and the commitment to person-centred care. While many aspects of the service are praised, the report also identifies a few areas for further development to enhance the resident experience and operational efficiency.
On safety, the home has systems in place to protect residents from abuse and harm, with staff trained to recognise and report concerns. Risk assessments are used to keep people safe while promoting independence. However, some equipment maintenance required attention, and there were mixed views on staffing levels in one wing, although staff were generally visible and responsive.
In terms of how effective the care is, residents' needs were assessed prior to admission, and care plans reflected individual preferences. Staff receive good training and support. While the food is generally enjoyed, some residents expressed a desire for more variety in evening meals, and communication around mealtimes needed improvement. The service also collaborates well with healthcare professionals.
Regarding caring practices, residents consistently described staff as kind, caring, and helpful, with a strong emphasis on dignity and respect. Staff engage in meaningful interactions, fostering a relaxed and caring atmosphere. Residents and their relatives are involved in care planning and decision-making.
In the area of being responsive, care plans are detailed and personalised, ensuring residents' needs and preferences are met. Activities are varied, and residents are encouraged to participate in things important to them. The service also aims to meet communication needs effectively. A recommendation was made to further develop end-of-life planning.
Finally, concerning leadership, the registered manager is visible and approachable, and staff have a clear understanding of their roles. Quality assurance systems are in place to drive continuous improvement. While audits are completed effectively, the report indicates a need for further development in end-of-life planning and to address minor environmental improvements on one wing.
