Inspected 20 November 2018 · report published 12 December 2018What inspectors found
Haven House in Haslemere provides personal care and accommodation for up to nine adults, supporting seven residents at the time of this inspection. Although the home is larger than current registration guidelines typically recommend for supporting people with learning disabilities, inspectors found that the service successfully helps residents live ordinary and independent lives. The overall findings demonstrate that the home continues to maintain high standards across all areas, ensuring a safe, homely, and well-maintained environment where residents receive consistent, individualized support from a dedicated team.
When it comes to safety, the home properly assesses and manages potential risks, records and reviews all incidents to prevent recurrence, and safely administers medications. Staff are recruited through thorough vetting procedures, and sufficient numbers of personnel are deployed so that residents never have to wait for care. The physical environment is clean, accessible, and equipped with necessary aids, while emergency contingency plans are firmly in place.
The service is highly effective in meeting individual health and nutritional needs, offering meaningful food choices and following professional healthcare guidance. Staff complete thorough inductions and relevant training, such as the Care Certificate and specialised courses, ensuring they possess the right skills. Furthermore, the home operates fully within the principles of the Mental Capacity Act, ensuring proper best-interest decisions and legal safeguards are utilized.
Residents experience genuinely caring support from staff who know them well, understand their unique communication styles, and respect their privacy and dignity. The home strongly encourages independence by involving residents in daily household tasks and providing individual lockable letterboxes. Visitors are always welcomed, and staff actively help residents maintain and rebuild important personal relationships with family and friends.
The service is highly responsive to changing needs, maintaining detailed care plans and involving relatives in regular reviews. Residents enjoy a variety of activities both at home and within the community, and sensitive discussions regarding end-of-life wishes are conducted when appropriate. Although there was a minor past incident where a resident caught their foot in a wheelchair footplate while it was stored in their bedroom, staff immediately resolved the issue by changing the storage arrangements to prevent any repeat occurrences.
Leadership at the service is strong, approachable, and transparent, fostering a positive culture shared by both staff and management. Effective auditing systems continuously monitor the quality of care provided, while feedback is actively sought from residents and their relatives. Staff report feeling exceptionally well-supported through regular supervision and ongoing professional development opportunities within the organization.
