Shottermill House

Shottermill House is a residential care home providing personalised and nursing care for up to 31 individuals, many of whom are living with the frailties of old age and dementia. This report summarises findings from a CQC inspection conducted on 20 August 2020, focusing specifically on infection prevention and control measures in place during the COVID-19 pandemic. The inspection aimed to identify good practices and ensure regulatory compliance.

Regarding safety, the home demonstrated robust adherence to infection prevention and control procedures. Measures were in place to protect residents, visitors, and staff from infection, including effective use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and consistent access to testing. The premises were kept clean, with a strong cleaning schedule and adjustments to communal areas to promote social distancing. Arrangements for safe admissions and managing potential outbreaks were also assured, aligning with current shielding and social distancing guidelines.

In terms of how effective the care is, the inspection focused on the home’s response to the pandemic. Staff were ensuring residents could maintain contact with loved ones through various means, including video calls and emails, when in-person visits were not possible.

The caring approach was evident in how the home supported residents and their families. Arrangements for visiting were flexible, taking into account individual preferences and external conditions, ensuring a safe environment for all.

Concerning responsiveness, the service adapted to the circumstances by implementing necessary safety protocols. Clear communication was provided to visitors, and appointments were managed to minimise risk. The layout of the home was also adjusted to allow for isolation if required, demonstrating a proactive approach.

On how well-led the service is, the inspection confirmed that the provider's infection prevention and control policy was up-to-date and effectively implemented. Staff were working diligently to maintain a safe environment, with additional housekeeping support in place to uphold high hygiene standards throughout the premises.
