This report provides an overview of the recent CQC inspection of Heaton Vale, a residential care home for adults with autism and learning disabilities. The inspection focused on assessing the safety, effectiveness, caring nature, responsiveness, and leadership of the service. The findings highlight areas where the home excels in providing compassionate support and meeting residents' needs, while also identifying specific points for development to further enhance the overall quality of care.
On safety, the home has systems in place to protect residents from abuse and effectively prevent and control infections. However, improvements are needed in the secure storage of certain substances and in ensuring medication administration records are consistently completed to best practice standards. In terms of how effective the care is, residents' needs are assessed and care plans are personalised and reviewed regularly. Yet, there are areas where the service is not always working in line with the principles of the Mental Capacity Act, requiring further attention to ensure decisions are made in residents' best interests.
The service is caring, with residents and their relatives expressing positive feedback about the staff's understanding of needs and the dignified, respectful way care is delivered. Staff are described as working for the right reasons, genuinely wanting to make a difference. Regarding how responsive the service is, residents' care plans are person-centred and staff are adept at offering choices tailored to individual communication needs. Relatives also report positive experiences with activities provided for their loved ones.
Finally, concerning how well-led the service is, the registered manager and staff demonstrate a person-centred culture focused on individual needs, and professionals speak positively about partnership working. However, there are areas requiring improvement in leadership, including the need for clearer communication with some relatives and ensuring all medication policies are fully understood and implemented by staff.
