What inspectors found

Peel Moat is a residential care home offering personal care to up to 31 older people, including those with dementia. This recent inspection report provides an overview of the care and facilities at Peel Moat, focusing on key areas to ensure resident well-being. The report highlights specific findings from the inspectors' visit, offering a detailed look at the home's operations and the experiences of its residents and their families. It aims to give families a clear picture of what to expect when considering Peel Moat for their loved ones.

Regarding safety, the home has made some environmental improvements, but overall progress has been slow. While staff recruitment is conducted safely, there were concerns about medication management, including incomplete records and issues with medication storage. A significant issue identified was the lack of appropriate checks for the passenger lift, which had been out of order for some time, impacting residents' mobility and daily routines. Cleaning practices were generally good, though a cleaning product was found unsecured during the inspection.

In terms of how effective the care is, residents' needs and choices are generally well-assessed, and staff receive appropriate training to support their roles. Residents are supported to eat and drink adequately, with a good choice of food, although there were comments about food sometimes being cold. The service has also made adaptations to the building to meet residents' needs, and personal preferences are reflected in individual rooms.

The caring aspect of the service is a strong point, with staff consistently treating residents with dignity and respect. Inspectors observed staff taking time to talk with residents, who appeared comfortable seeking assistance. Staff demonstrate a good understanding of residents' individual likes and dislikes, and actively encourage independence, supporting residents to manage personal care tasks.

The home is responsive to residents' needs, ensuring that care plans are personalised and that residents are supported to engage in activities they enjoy. There are good relationships with the local community, and efforts are made to involve residents in social events. The service also engages appropriately with feedback and concerns raised, as demonstrated by their response to issues regarding the lift.

However, the service's leadership and management require improvement. Audits have not always identified key issues, such as medication management and lift safety, and progress on necessary improvements has been slow. While the management team does engage with residents and their families, systems are not consistently in place to effectively monitor and ensure the overall safety and governance of the service.
