Herne Place Care Home underwent a recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) to assess the quality of care provided. This report details the findings across key areas, offering families insights into the home's performance. While the home has a dedicated team and some positive changes in atmosphere, the inspection identified areas requiring attention to ensure the highest standards of care are consistently met. The report focuses on how the service is safe and well-led.
Regarding safety, there were instances where risk assessments and care plans were not fully up-to-date, creating minor inconsistencies that have since been addressed. However, staff are well-trained in safeguarding and infection control, with appropriate personal protective equipment readily available, and visitors are welcomed according to current guidance. The home also operates within the principles of the Mental Capacity Act, ensuring people's choices are supported.
In terms of effectiveness, residents are supported by staff who know how to protect them and understand their responsibilities to report concerns. Safeguarding alerts are raised and investigated appropriately, and staff are equipped to minimise the risk of infections. People are supported to have control over their lives and are cared for in a way that is least restrictive and in their best interests.
The caring aspect of the service is highlighted by staff speaking positively about the positive change in culture and atmosphere since the new manager's arrival, with staff feeling more supported and respected. Residents appeared content, and positive interactions were observed between staff and residents.
The responsiveness of the service is demonstrated by staff responding promptly when needed, and visitors being able to see their loved ones. While meetings with residents and relatives were paused during the transition of management, a "You said. We did." process is in place to feedback on suggestions, and an "open door" policy encourages immediate communication of concerns.
Finally, on how well-led the service is, the report notes that while there was a period without a registered manager, a new manager has been appointed and is in the process of registration, with support from another registered manager. Audits are in place to identify and rectify shortfalls, and staff have reported a positive change in culture and a feeling of being well-supported. The manager is aware of regulatory requirements and has notified the CQC of important events. The service is actively working to resume resident and relative meetings to gather feedback.
