Orchard House in Herne Bay is a residential care home providing personal care and support for up to 15 adults, primarily living with Huntingdon's Disease. During our visit, people living at the home and their relatives told us they felt the service was safe, welcoming, and that residents were well cared for by attentive staff. The home consists of a main adapted building and a separate bungalow on the grounds. Following previous areas for improvement noted during our last inspection, significant progress has been made across all key areas to ensure better outcomes for everyone living there.
Potential risks to people's health and welfare are now properly assessed and managed, with clear guidance in place for staff regarding mobility equipment and specific medical conditions like diabetes. Medicines are stored, recorded, and administered safely following strict legal requirements, and staff have worked closely with local healthcare teams to maintain high standards. While the home environment is generally well-maintained with a recently updated communal lounge, some other areas of the building appear worn and tired, though the provider has ongoing plans to update decoration and carpeting.
People achieve positive daily outcomes and receive tailored care based on recognized professional guidelines and standards. Staff complete a thorough induction, receive relevant training for their roles, and understand how to support individuals with Huntingdon's Disease, including providing high-calorie diets fortified with butter and cream. Healthcare needs are monitored closely with prompt referrals to professionals when changes occur, and staff work within legal frameworks to ensure decisions are made in people's best interests.
Care is organized flexibly around individual choices, preferences, and daily routines, with care plans now fully updated and accessible on a new electronic system. Staff support residents to maintain their independence and personal appearance, and use practical communication tools like chalkboards to help people understand daily information. Relatives can visit freely and are made to feel welcome, while residents enjoy spending time with visiting family members in their rooms or the garden.
Management and leadership have improved significantly since our last inspection, successfully addressing all previous regulatory breaches and action plans. Regular internal checks and audits are now effective at identifying any shortfalls so that prompt corrective action can be taken. Staff feel well-supported by the management team, and there are reliable systems in place to handle complaints, analyze incidents, and maintain safe, organized operations throughout the service.
