This report summarises the findings of a CQC inspection at Highfield Care Home. The inspection reviewed the care provided against five key questions: Is the service safe? Is the service effective? Is the service caring? Is the service responsive? Is the service well-led? This inspection follows a previous one where improvements were required. This report details the progress made and identifies areas for continued development.
On safety, the home has improved its systems for checking equipment and managing risks, though some documentation and moving and handling practices need more consistent application. Recruitment processes are robust, and medicines are managed safely. However, there are specific areas needing more detailed risk assessment, such as for epilepsy and self-harm.
In terms of how effective the care is, residents receive support in line with current standards, and staff are well-trained and have access to ongoing development. People are supported with their dietary needs and have good access to healthcare professionals. The home environment is maintained, with a recommendation made to further enhance it for residents with dementia.
Regarding caring practices, staff know residents well and treat them with kindness, compassion, dignity, and respect. They actively promote independence and involve residents and their families in care decisions.
In terms of how responsive the service is, care plans are detailed and kept up-to-date to inform staff about residents' needs. The home supports families with end-of-life care and offers a range of activities to promote wellbeing. Systems are in place to address complaints, but a review of these processes has been recommended.
On how well-led the service is, there are good systems for engaging staff, residents, and families. The registered manager works collaboratively with external agencies to drive improvement. Quality assurance processes provide oversight, and responsibilities are clearly defined.
