What inspectors found

Hill Brow is a purpose-built residential care home supporting up to 28 older people, providing a comfortable environment with secure access, a lift, and landscaped gardens. Overall, residents and their families express high satisfaction, noting that the home is run very well by a dedicated team. The service benefits from a strong learning culture, highly trained permanent staff with zero reliance on agency workers, and strong community partnerships that help achieve positive outcomes for residents.

Residents feel secure in the home, supported by robust risk assessments, regular safety checks, and proper medication management. Staff receive regular safeguarding training and know how to report concerns. However, the inspection noted one point for improvement regarding infection control practices, as two residents requiring hoists shared a single sling instead of having individual ones, though management resolved this immediately on the day of the report.

Care delivery consistently exceeds expectations through the use of evidence-based tools to monitor health, frailty, and nutritional needs, alongside strong clinical training and continuous staff development pathways. Residents enjoy appetizing meals with flexible options and ready access to snacks and hydration. While the dining service is unhurried and sociable, serving lunch involves checking vegetable preferences at the point of service, which makes the process slightly slower.

Residents receive compassionate, highly personalized support from a permanent staff team that includes no agency workers, ensuring consistency of care. Staff are trained to understand individual needs, including dementia care, and actively support residents to achieve personal goals like going on holiday. Families are also well supported during sensitive times, such as through special memory keepsakes and end-of-life care baskets provided to relatives.

The service is exceptionally responsive to individual needs, offering tailored mental health support through a local partnership pilot and utilizing graduated staff training for dementia care. Staff listen carefully to suggestions and actively encourage independence. Relatives are meaningfully included in care planning, and the service excels at fulfilling individual wishes and maintaining strong communication with families.

Leadership remains strong and stable following a recent management transition that was handled seamlessly for residents. Feedback from residents and families is regularly sought and acted upon. The management works effectively in partnership with external health professionals and local initiatives, ensuring the home operates smoothly and continuously improves the quality of life for everyone living there.
