What inspectors found

Hilton House is a residential care home set across two floors with a large outdoor area, providing personalized support for up to ten people of all ages who have learning disabilities and mental health needs. The home aims to help residents live full, meaningful lives with a strong focus on independence, personal choice, and daily involvement. During the unannounced inspection, residents shared that they felt safe, valued, and listened to, while staff demonstrated a clear understanding of individual needs and preferences.

Residents felt secure living in the home, supported by robust safeguarding procedures, thorough staff background checks, and well-managed medication systems. Staff assessed individual health and lifestyle risks carefully, balancing safety with positive choices.

Care was effective and tailored to individual needs, supported by proper staff training, regular supervision, and healthy, balanced diets that incorporated residents' favorite meals. The home collaborated closely with dieticians, mental health professionals, and other healthcare agencies to ensure consistent support.

Staff created a warm, calm atmosphere and treated residents with genuine kindness, respect, and compassion. Care was highly personalized, taking into account individual communication styles, religious beliefs, personal goals, and the right to privacy or alone time.

Residents remained actively involved in planning their daily routines, hobbies, and personal goals, such as learning to manage their own finances or attending college courses. While complaints procedures were clear and accessible, inspectors recommended exploring end-of-life care preferences in more detail with residents, as discussions on this topic had been limited.

The service was managed by an approachable and open registered manager who fostered a welcoming and inclusive culture. Effective quality assurance systems were in place to monitor standards and continuously drive improvements across the home.
