Inspected 8 March 2023 · report published 31 May 2023What inspectors found
This report provides an overview of Lychgate House following a recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission. It assesses the service against five key questions: Safe, Effective, Caring, Responsive, and Well-led. While the inspection identified several areas requiring improvement, it also highlighted positive aspects of care provided at the home. The overall aim of this summary is to offer families a clear, concise understanding of the inspection findings to aid in their decision-making process.
On safety, the report found that systems to protect residents from harm were not consistently in place, with some areas of the environment requiring attention for hygiene and maintenance, and infection control measures needing improvement. Staff were recruited safely, had appropriate training, and sufficient numbers were available to meet residents' needs, with medicines being well-managed and administered safely. However, there were instances where risks were not fully identified or mitigated, and lessons from incidents were not always learned or shared.
In terms of how effective the care is, while care plans were reviewed and contained relevant information, their focus was task-oriented with some negative language, and input from residents and families could have been more consistently sought. Staff received good training and support, and residents enjoyed a varied diet with good access to food and drinks. The home also supported residents in accessing healthcare services and operated within the principles of the Mental Capacity Act, with appropriate documentation for decisions.
The service was found to be caring, with staff consistently treating residents with kindness, compassion, and respect, and actively promoting their independence and dignity. Residents and their relatives reported feeling well-treated and happy, with staff clearly knowing and engaging well with each individual.
Regarding responsiveness, care plans, while containing necessary information, lacked detail and consistent formatting, with a recommendation made for guidance on person-centred care planning. The service is moving towards an electronic system for care plans to improve consistency. There were no specific plans for end-of-life care, and this area was identified for development.
In the area of being well-led, oversight systems were not robust enough to consistently identify and implement improvements, and there was a lack of clear analysis and learning from incidents. While staff meetings were documented, they did not always incorporate discussions on lessons learned or best practice.
This is an editorial summary intended to make the inspection findings easier to read — it is not a substitute for the full report, and is not medical or care advice.
