Inspected 19 August 2022 · report published 6 September 2022What inspectors found
Hothfield Brain Injury Rehabilitation and Neurological Care Centre provides specialized nursing and neurological rehabilitation for adults with acquired brain injuries and conditions. The service operates a rehabilitation unit for intensive, short-term recovery alongside a longer-term manor home. Overall, the environment is supportive and focused on maximizing independence, though the report highlights specific areas requiring attention across different aspects of daily operations.
Regarding safety, the inspection found that medication management needs improvement. Specifically, records for when-required medicines lacked clear protocols, hand-written prescription changes were frequently missing authorising signatures, and medicine storage temperatures in rooms were sometimes inconsistently monitored or too high. Additionally, individual fire risk assessments were missing for people using paraffin-based skin products. On the positive side, robust safeguarding policies were in place, thorough background checks were completed for staff, and infection control measures met expected standards.
The care provided is effective, supported by comprehensive pre-admission assessments that help tailor rehabilitation goals to each individual. Staff undergo detailed inductions, complete relevant e-learning, and shadow experienced colleagues to build confidence. Nurses and health professionals maintain up-to-date registrations and qualifications, and care is delivered in accordance with the Mental Capacity Act, ensuring proper consent and best-interest decisions are made.
The atmosphere is noticeably caring, with staff demonstrating genuine empathy and treating residents and their families with kindness. Personal preferences, likes, and dislikes are carefully considered, and daily support respects individual privacy and dignity. Relatives reported feeling warmly welcomed and confident in the supportive relationships staff build with residents.
The service is responsive to individual needs, offering timely support when call bells are used and promoting personal choice wherever possible. Incidents and accidents are reviewed electronically via a dedicated system, allowing the team to learn lessons, update care plans, and adjust safety measures or dietary guidance accordingly.
Leadership is visible and person-centred, fostering a strong culture where staff, residents, and relatives are involved in shaping the service. While staff in the manor home noted they occasionally felt too busy with tasks to sit and chat socially, management actively engages with feedback and works to optimize staffing arrangements and oversight.
