What inspectors found

Kathryn's House in Guildford provides accommodation, personal care, and nursing for up to 29 older adults, including individuals living with dementia and mental health support needs. During an unannounced inspection, the home was found to be meeting all required standards across every evaluated area. Residents, relatives, and staff shared positive feedback about the overall environment, the quality of daily life, and the supportive management team in place.

Risks to residents are effectively managed through detailed assessments, thorough background checks for new staff, and safe medicine handling systems. The environment is kept clean and secure, though specific safety measures like sensor mats and mobility aids are utilized where necessary.

Staff receive regular training, supervision, and mentorship to help them support residents properly. While the food is generally praised with good menu choices available, one lunchtime observation noted that the mealtime experience lacked organization for a resident who experienced anxiety and inconsistent staff support.

Residents are treated with genuine kindness, and staff consistently respect their privacy and personal dignity. Visitors are welcomed warmly, and individuals are encouraged to maintain as much of their personal independence as possible.

Care plans are highly personalized, reflecting people's life histories, communication needs, and individual preferences. Residents have access to a variety of tailored activities, and clear arrangements are in place to support their wishes at the end of life.

The management fosters an open and positive culture where staff feel supported and valued. Regular quality audits are conducted, and feedback is actively gathered from residents, families, and staff to continually improve the service.
