This report from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) provides an overview of the inspection of Larkfield, a residential care home for up to seven individuals with learning disabilities. The inspection assessed how safe, effective, caring, responsive, and well-led the service is, aiming to ensure residents receive high-quality support. The service overall continues to be rated well, reflecting the consistent efforts of the team. However, as with any service, the inspection identified specific areas where attention is needed to further enhance the resident experience and ensure best practices are followed consistently across the board.
On safety, while risks were assessed and staff were aware of management plans, there was a need for improvement in how medicines were administered and recorded, with instances of inaccuracies and missed doses noted. Sufficient staff were deployed, and safe recruitment practices were followed, with staff also trained to recognise and report abuse.
In terms of how effective the care is, staff received regular training and support, with care plans developed according to recognised guidance. People were supported with their dietary needs, and staff demonstrated a good understanding of the Mental Capacity Act to ensure resident consent and support decision-making in the least restrictive way possible.
The service was found to be caring, with staff treating residents with kindness and consideration. People were actively involved in decisions about their care and were treated with dignity and respect for their privacy. Staff also supported residents in maintaining important relationships and ensuring meaningful activities were available.
Regarding how responsive the service is, care and support were tailored to individual needs and preferences. The home had a clear complaints policy, and relatives felt comfortable raising concerns, though they hadn't needed to do so. The service also planned for end-of-life care needs, ensuring residents' wishes were considered.
Finally, on how well-led the service is, there was a registered manager in place with a good understanding of their responsibilities. Robust systems were in place for monitoring quality and safety, with prompt action taken to address identified issues. Feedback from residents, relatives, and staff was actively sought and generally positive, indicating a well-managed and collaborative team environment.
